The Ber Months @ ALife

From the GM’s Chair — a peek behind the scene, where sitting is rarely seen!

The idea for this article came to me quite unexpectedly in early September.

Our Social Worker came to me with two invoices for mother and baby supplies that needed my approval. As she handed them to me, she also shared some wonderful news!

Two of our aLife clients had given birth: one at the end of August and another at the beginning of September.

“She has given birth.”

We both burst into smiles.

There was something especially joyful about signing off those invoices knowing that these supplies would be going to two new mothers and their babies. After journeying alongside them, it was wonderful to finally hear that their little ones had arrived.

And that was when the idea for this article came to me: the “Ber Months” must look very different through the eyes of these two mothers.

The Buzzing Ber Months...

Wrapping Up the Year, Welcoming New Life

For many of us, SeptemBER, OctoBER, NovemBER and DecemBER are months of anticipation, counting down to the New Year.

Here at aLife, the year-end months keep everyone on their toes!

Our Caterpillar Club children are buzzing and making memories at our September holiday Art workshop...

Behind the scenes, preparations for our Charity Gala Dinner on 14th November are in full swing...

Out on the streets, there’s a growing sense of festivity planning celebrations....

Deepavali and Christmas, family gatherings, special meals and New Year Celebrations!

Yet...for these two mothers, there is also a countdown, but one of a very different kind….

As the world looks towards celebrations at the end of the year, these mothers are looking towards the beginning of a new chapter. One welcomed her baby just as August came to an end, while the other entered motherhood as September began.

The “Ber” months will mark the first precious months of their babies’ lives — months of getting to know their little ones, adjusting to new routines and discovering the joys and challenges of motherhood. And perhaps that is what makes the “Ber Months” so meaningful for us at aLife — they remind us that while we celebrate the closing of one year, new beginnings are happening all around us.

When Crunch Time Calls, We Divide & Conquer!

For one of our clients, to address several needs within a short timeframe, our plan was to  “divide and conquer”!

Our Social Worker focused on her housing and practical needs.

Our Volunteer Manager matched her with one of our dedicated Befrienders for regular support on infant care and parent craft.

And I had the privilege of supporting her through psychotherapy, working through some of her anxieties about motherhood.

It was a simple example of what aLife’s holistic support is about — working together to care not only for the baby, but also for the mother: her emotional wellbeing, confidence, hopes and fears.

When New Lives Arrive, Our Hearts Come Alive

An unplanned pregnancy can begin with uncertainty. There may be difficult decisions, relationship concerns, financial pressures or fears about whether one is ready to become a parent. Our role is to walk alongside women and families through these moments, offering counselling, practical support and encouragement.

For these two mothers, the journey has now moved into a different season. Their babies are here. The new mothers are learning to respond to little cries, discovering their babies’ personalities, adjusting to new routines and finding their own confidence as mothers.

As the “Ber Months” lead us towards end-year festivities, we are reminded that hope does not always arrive in grand ways.

Sometimes….hope begins with a conversation.

Sometimes….it looks like counselling, practical help or a safe place to stay.

And sometimes….hope comes to life in the form of a tiny baby — bringing new routines, new challenges and a whole new kind of love.

When new life arrives, everyone smiles — and perhaps, in those moments, our hearts come alive too, to the possibility of a new beginning.

Perhaps this is also why our aLife Charity Gala Dinner on 14 November, themed “From Nope to Hope,” is so meaningful- — it helps make moments like these possible — providing counselling when a mother is anxious, practical help when a family is struggling, and essential support to help prepare a mother and baby for a new beginning. And a children and youth club to continue developing little ones and not so little ones!

The beginning we NEVER EXPECTED

Becomes the story we NEVER IMAGINED

As we celebrate new life this “Ber Month” season, may we remember that even the most unexpected chapters can open doors to new possibilities. And sometimes, all it takes is someone to walk alongside us to help that story unfold with hope.
