Urinary Infection

The opening of the urinary bladder (urethra) is very close to the vagina and the anus. During sexual intercourse, bacteria in and around the vagina and lower bowel are pushed into the urethra by the movement of the penis. These bacteria grow in the bladder and cause urinary tract infection. This is called "Honeymoon cystitis". Symptoms include:

  • Sudden urge to urinate (urgency)
  • Frequent urination (frequency)
  • Pain, burning, or cramps during or immediately after urination (dysuria)
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying of bladder
  • Cloudy urine
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Lower abdominal cramps, soreness, or pain
  • Backache
  • Fever

If left untreated, it can cause kidney infection with serious complications such as kidney failure.

The following may help to prevent "Honeymoon Cystitis":

  • Stop sexual intercourse for a while until the urinary infection is adequately treated.
  • Wash the hands and external genitalia before sexual intercourse.
  • Urinate after sexual intercourse.
  • Monitor sexual positions that appear to be associated with the onset of urinary infection. Avoid these positions or activities.
  • Spermicidal gels may increase the chances of urinary infection.
  • Drink plenty (at least 8 glasses) of water a day to flush bacteria from the urinary tract.
  • Urinate frequently (every 2 to 3 hours) or as soon as you feel the urge.
  • Do not hold urine when the bladder is full.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing, which restricts the circulation of air, traps moisture, and promotes bacterial growth. Instead, wear loose clothing and choose cotton underwear.
  • Clean the area around the vagina and anus carefully after urination or after bowel movement. Wipe from front to back to avoid contaminating the urethra with bacteria.
  • Cranberry juice may help preventing urinary infection.
