Sore Nipples After Delivery

Sore nipples could be due to vigorous or prolonged suckling by the baby. The baby may not latch-on to the nipple and the jaws compress the nipple and make it sore. The following ways may help:

1. Try to breast feed at shorter intervals; say every 2-3 hours for 5-15 min per breast.
2. After feeding, release the suction gently by placing a clean finger between the baby's jaws.
3. Take the baby away until you feel the suction break.
4. If the breasts are still engorged after feeding, gently message and try to empty the breasts by hand or pump.
5. Use the least sore nipple to breast feed first.
6. Limit the nursing time on the sore nipples.
7. Express a little milk to message and wet the nipples after feeding. Leave them open as much as possible to air dry. This will help to soften and hydrate the nipples and help the cracks if any to heal faster.
8. Use bra pads or wear multiple holed breast shell or nipple shield to protect the nipples from rubbing on the bra fabric between nursings.
9. After all, breastfeeding is meant to be a comfortable and pleasant experience. So do not be discouraged by the teething problem.
